Murphy are seeking an experienced Senior Draughtsman to join our technical design team delivering capital projects in the UK water industry.

This role focuses on producing high-quality, accurate technical drawings and 3D models for clean water and wastewater infrastructure projects for treatment facilities. You will provide specialist CAD and design support from concept through to construction and handover, ensuring designs are buildable, compliant, and optimised for safety, cost, and sustainability.

You will work closely with engineers and project teams to translate technical requirements into clear, coordinated drawings and models that support AMP investment programmes.

What you will be doing:

  • Produce and manage detailed 2D drawings and 3D models (general arrangement, layout, civil, structural, mechanical, P&IDs, and isometric drawings) for water and wastewater schemes, including sludge treatment assets.
  • Develop and maintain accurate drawings for sludge treatment processes and associated pipework, pumping systems, and civil structures.
  • Ensure all drawings and models comply with company standards, BS EN standards, BIM Level requirements, and relevant water industry specifications.
  • Collaborate with engineers to incorporate design changes, resolve clashes, and optimise layouts for constructability and operability.
  • Carry out site surveys and measurements to support accurate as-built drawings and red-line mark-ups.
  • Review and check drawings produced by junior draughtsmen or external designers for quality and consistency.
  • Prepare drawing packs, schedules, and documentation for tender, construction, and handover (including O&M manuals support).
  • Support digital delivery using BIM, Revit, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Plant 3D, and GIS integration where required.
  • Contribute to technical optioneering and value engineering through clear visual communication of design alternatives.
  • Maintain drawing registers, version control, and compliance with CDM and health & safety requirements on drawings

 

Who we are looking for:

  • HNC/HND or equivalent in Engineering, CAD, or a related technical discipline (or significant relevant experience).
  • Minimum 6–8 years’ experience as a draughtsman/designer in the UK water industry or heavy process industry.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD (2D & 3D), with experience of Revit, Civil 3D, or Plant 3D.
  • Demonstrable experience producing drawings for wastewater treatment works, particularly sludge treatment facilities.
  • Good understanding of water/wastewater processes, civil/mechanical layouts, pipework, and structural detailing.
  • Knowledge of relevant standards including BS 8888, CDM 2015, and water industry design specifications.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • BIM Level 2 accreditation or practical experience working in a BIM environment.
  • Experience with additional software such as MicroStation, Navisworks, or specialist process modelling tools.
  • Familiarity with MEICA (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control & Automation) detailing in sludge and wastewater assets.
  • Previous work on AMP programmes with major UK water utilities or consultancies.
  • Understanding of sustainability and net-zero considerations in design.
  • High level of technical accuracy and attention to detail in producing clear, coordinated drawings.
  • Strong spatial awareness and ability to visualise complex 3D arrangements from 2D information.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to resolve design clashes and practical construction issues.
  • Good communication skills to liaise effectively with engineers, site teams, and contractors.
  • Organised approach to managing multiple drawing tasks and maintaining version control.
  • Proactive attitude with a focus on quality, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Commitment to health & safety and environmental standards in the water sector.
