Role Overview
Murphy is significantly expanding its in-house design and detailing capabilities for structural steel projects, driven by a strong pipeline of work. As part of this growth, we are recruiting a Senior Structural Steel Design Engineer to join our structural steel engineering team in Newbridge. In this senior role, you will lead the design of steel structures and connections for major building and infrastructure projects across Ireland and the UK. The Senior Structural Steel Design Engineer ensures that all steel designs and their connections are safe, efficient, and compliant with standards, while also coordinating with our fabrication and construction teams to support successful project delivery. This position requires both deep technical expertise in structural steelwork and connection design and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced project environment. It is a full-time, permanent role suited for an experienced structural engineer with a specialty in steel connection design.
What you will be doing:
- As a senior engineer, you will excel in steelwork designs and their connections, seamlessly integrating with our team and helping design manager to carry out daily design work. You need to work closely with your design manager and ensure that the projects meet legal guidelines, achieve required level of quality standards, environmental directives, and health and safety standards.
- Responsible for designing and reviewing steel connections for structural steelwork, including calculation reports, drawings, and 3D models that are accurate, practical, and compliant with Eurocode&BS5950 and project specifications. Ensures designs support safe and efficient fabrication and erection.
- Oversees the quality of design deliverables through checks, peer reviews, and design risk assessments.
- Ability to resolve steel design related issues during fabrication and construction, addressing TQs and solving on‑site challenges with safe, compliant solutions. Coordinates with temporary works and methods teams where required. Provide temporary works design for the Project Managers if it is required.
- Contributes to improved design efficiency by developing standard details, using design tools effectively, and identifying value-engineering opportunities. Supports the development of junior engineers through guidance and design review.
Represents the steelwork design discipline in meetings, clearly communicating progress and explaining design decisions to clients, and their design managers, and third‑party reviewers.
Requied Qualifications and Experience
- A Level 8 degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is required, with a master’s degree considered an advantage. Chartered status or a defined path toward chartership is strongly preferred.
- A minimum of three to five years of solid structural steel design experience is expected, including substantial experience in steel connection and temporary works design.
- A solid understanding of structural analysis and design principles and practices.
- Knowledge of fabrication and erection processes is important.
- Strong understanding of Eurocode 3, BS5950, BS5975 and associated standards is essential.
- Ability to do hand calculations.
- Have a proficiency at least one design and analysis software such as Tekla Structural Designer/Robot preferred / Masterframe is not a must but it is acceptable.
- Proficiency in software such as IDEA StatiCa, MasterSeries Connection, Tekla Connection Designer.
- Ability to write own spreadsheets(Not a must but desired).
- Ability to use efficiently Autocad however hand drawing skill is a must.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage workloads across multiple projects are essential.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills are required to collaborate effectively with engineering, detailing, fabrication, and site teams.
- Demonstrated problem‑solving ability, attention to detail, and capability to develop safe, practical solutions are important. Experience mentoring junior staff is a must.
- A strong commitment to safety in design, including understanding of CDM principles and designing for safe construction, is required.
- A proactive approach with a willingness to learn, passion for the profession and develop within the role.
